So, posting has been minimal. I always intend to get online to record happening with the family and share all of the pictures we take of the kids, but life just keeps moving too quickly in order to sit down and write. I’m hoping to catch up the next couple of weeks with posting stuff I should have gotten up months ago. Fingers crossed.

There goes posting and reply to comments and email while on lunch. With so little time at home my blogging is likely to slow down a bit or my posts are going to be a lot shorter.

With life being as busy as it has been for months and seeing as there is no relief in sight I took it upon myself to weed out the blogs that I don’t really need to read and really don’t like from my list. My google reader went from 173 subscriptions down to 98. That’s still quite high, but many are slow to post so it is manageable.

This is something that has existed in WordPress for a while now, but I never used. Figuring that it was a nice idea to add tags to my posts instead of creating a slew of categories made sense. I’ll keep using them for now and you tell me if you find them useful. You probably won’t see anything helpful in the tag cloud until I’ve posted quite a bit more. I’m toying with the idea of going back to old posts to add tags, but then again that might be a waste of time.

To fix it last time I had to manually update the files that the plug-in uses to display videos. This time I had to go back to the post and remove quotes from the video filenames. What a PITA! I only fixed videos posted since the beginning of the year. I don’t have the time or patience to go back any further.

Hopefully everything from now on will go more smoothly.

All the videos seem to be working fine. I hope it was fixed by my manually updating the files used by the flash video player plug-in, but I could be wrong. I’m not even sure now if the update to WordPress caused it to break.

That being said I upgraded this blog to WordPress 2.5. So far so good. It usually isn’t best practice to immediately install a new release of anything, but seeing as this is a personal blog I’m willing to risk problems so that I’m up to date. I’m sure a 2.5.1 and 2.5.2 are in the works.

If you haven’t tried WP 2.5 I suggest you do. The admin screens have changed a lot and for the better. There are plenty of great articles out there so I won’t rehash the same highlights. The admins screens have been pretty much ignored for a while so it is refreshing to see that they get some due attention.

I prefer a minimalist look, but never took the time to make changes to the theme. Then I went and did it only to find out that IE didn’t like the changes. This past week I gave it another shot and made sure my changes were IE sensitive so as not to alienate both of my readers. (Hi Jess! Hi Mom!)

Basically, I got rid of the three column format. Condensed three into two. Made the columns a bit wider to accommodate more information. Moved the blogroll to its own page. Trimmed the rarely used categories. Removed the “meta” links and re-styled the rss links. Lastly, I dropped the ClustrMap and the image from my CC license.

I think the final result is pretty nice. A little simpler and a bit more functional. Pages also load faster. The only thing I haven’t figured out just yet is why my 中文化 page link in the header renders oddly in IE. If you know why let me know and I’ll fix it. Otherwise ignore it or switch over a any non-IE browser.

Updated:
I decided the merge the 中文化 page with my new blogs & links page since it was only a place for links. One less page. I also took the time to update my plugins. I’m happy to see that most have active developers and some annoyances have been addressed.
