Swimming

The weather this past week and half has been really warm. It’s like summer got all saved up and we are getting all of the heat and humidity now. To beat the heat we decided to bring the kids to the local pool. We ended up having a better time than I expected. The pool is not far away from our house and despite being incredibly hot the place was not so busy that you couldn’t move. There was plenty of space for us.

This was Emelia and Caitlin’s first trip to a pool and they both had a great time. It’s the first time in years that I’ve been in a pool. It felt great. Emelia was a little timid at first, but went right in with all of us. She spent most of her time on the stairs, but Sue was able to coax her in and she brought her around shallow end of the pool. I brought Caitlin in with me and she had a great time. Caitlin has no fear of water and loved being moved around and bounced up and down in the water.

Some of the other kids at the pool were jumping into their father’s arms from the side of the pool and James decided to join them. Not long after I talked Emelia into doing it. Sure enough she loved it. I didn’t let her go under, but she jumped mostly into the water. I finally asked her if she wanted me to catch her and she said no. So, I let her jump in. Plunk. She went all the way in and I brought her back up. She loved it. After she bored of jumping (which took a while) Sue taught her how to go under water. Sue also tried to teach her how to kick her feet and lay back in the water.

We had a great time and now I feel more confident that Emelia will enjoy swimming lessons. Just like James, we’ll be bringing her to the Y for lessons this fall. I hope she enjoys herself. Caitlin will wait until she is a little older, but most likely will start before she is Emelia’s age. She loves water and is fearless.

That’s awesome. It’s always good to get them lessons while they’re young.

I agree. I want the girls to be used to the water early on so that they have respect for water and enjoy themselves when they are older. I only wish I could put in a pool for them and swim more often at home.

I am concerned about bringing Emelia too the pool since we went with James one time last year and she freaked out. It was hot and very, very noisy. The older kids were screaming and making quite a lot of noise. She freaked out and we ended up waiting around in an exercise room. If she walks into the pool area when it is quiet we are golden. If it is anything like our last visit it’ll be a waste. Only time will tell.
