Independence Day Lunch at Daycare

Like most big holidays, on Independence day this year daycare invited parents in for lunch with the kids. I like to participate for various reasons. It is fun spending time with the kids, but it is almost equally enjoyable to interact with the other kids. It’s too bad that not all parents are able or willing to attend.

On the way in there was a huge American flag made up of hand and foot prints from each of the kids that attend daycare. Now we know where the mysterious blue paint on Caitlin’s toes came from.

The parents were invited to eat with the kids, but there didn’t seem to be many parents eating the food. I didn’t take lunch expecting to eat daycare. Maybe they were modest (I’m not modest when it comes to food) or they were not interested in the food. It’s too bad as the food was pretty good.

Here is Emelia eating the plate I made up for her. I ate about half of her food, but she ate the entire hot dog all by herself. I have to be honest and the pasta salad that Sue made was great. It was better that some of the other salads IMHO. The kids next to us spent most of the time crying. They wanted to go home with mommy, not eat.

After lunch the daycare folks brought out plates with all the makings of a mess. Two small cupcakes; red, white and blue frosting; and sprinkles. One of the parents brought all of it in for the toddlers so that they could assemble their own cupcakes. Emelia was a little slow to what she was supposed to do, but got the hang of it.

She inevitably became more interested in eating the sprinkles than decorating. I ate nearly both of the cupcakes myself.

Once we were done eating our dessert Emelia went to spend some time with James and Amy. I headed back to work full of yummy food.

Overall it was a fun time. While Emelia ate I had Caitlin on my knee (whilst sitting on a chair so short I was about 7 inches off the ground). This gave Caitlin’s teacher a chance to break away from the kids and eat a meal herself. Caitlin had a great time. With all of the noise that 18 toddlers generate she was all smiles and did her best to watch everything that was going on.
