The Victory Garden

This year we expanded our garden to fit our needs. Last year’s garden was great, but it was chock full of stuff and some plants just didn’t survive well under such cramped quarters. This year’s garden took a while to build out, but it’s about three times the size now. You can almost see all of it in this picture. The old garden is still visible in the back near the fence.

The old garden in the back and new in the front. Our strawberries took off last year. Six plants exploded and filled the entire bushy area you see in this photo. The light green plants are bok choy grown from seeds that we collected last year. From back to from are two zucchini plants, flowering thyme and kohlrabi. The kohlrabi unfortunately have since been nibbled down by rabbits. We have only three left and hope to keep them until the end of the season when they can be harvested.

Here you can see our tall asparagus plants, the already cut row of chives (they take about a week to grow back again) and a bush of oregano in the back.

Here we have about about eight of our tomato plants mixed in with basil plants.

In the back we have green pepper plants (on the left), mint (back) and Asian eggplant plants (right). A little tight, but these plants don’t grow too large even if given a lot of space.

Two cantaloupe plants that we are trying to grow for the first time. These are supposed to get pretty big.

In the front of the house we have a couple of patio tomatoes in pots.

Since taking these pictures we’ve planted a number of other plants. In the garden we’ve added a dill plant, Chinese spinach and six yellow grape tomato plants. I’ve also added a fence around the whole thing to keep the rabbits out. Once the weather gets a little warmer we’ll put down the rest of Sue’s seeds.

I hope to post some more pictures of the garden. It has changed rapidly since I took these pictures.
