Our Little One

An inch of ice one weekend. About 1 foot of snow on Friday and another 8 inches on Sunday. It’s turning out to get one busy winter so far. No to mention the temperature is always in the single digits or teens at night and in not much warmer in the day.

Emelia really has started to grasp “manners”. When she wants something she asks for it and says “please”. When you give her something she says “thank you”. It’s taken me by surprise how well she does, but I’m very happy all the same.

That being said she is tough. While in a store last night a woman was rudely blocking Sue’s path to the register where I was standing. Emelia took note and the proceeded to tell the woman to get out of her way. “Move. Move! Move!!” I asked her to stop, but I was made proud yet again. She takes charge even with strangers. The woman eventually realized and moved enough for Sue to get her cart through.

While driving most days I usually here “Look daddy! Lights! Look!” pretty much the entire way to wherever we are going. Emelia loves to point out things. She’s quick too. Snowmen and Santa are abundant these days and she likes to point them out. Last week I here her say “Gas. Gas. Look daddy. Gas.” Sure enough we were passing a gas station. Another night last week she grabbed my ole TI-85 and said “calculator”, which sounded more like “calc”. I’m not sure where she learns the words, but she remembers them.

Animals and their sounds are Emelia’s specialty. She knows the names of the common farm animals and some obscure ones like “salamander”. She can also reproduce their sounds too. “What does a turkey say?“ “Gobble, gobble!” “What does a donkey say?” “Hee-haw!” Too fun. Most of the time while reading she just says “I do!” and then proceeds to read the book by making all the sounds of the animals she sees.

you know, my mom has always used the term “little person” when referring to toddlers and more and more i am understanding why. they are exactly that, little people developing personalities and we are lucky enough to be able to watch it happen. so cool!
