Potty Training

Believe it or not the little girl wants to be potty trained. She’s been very observant of her own bodily functions and is very quick to tell us when she needs a change. She’s surprised Sue and I on a few occassions.

One recent surprise happened last week when Emelia stood up in the bath tub and kept saying “Wee-wee” over and over again while pointing to the appropriate area. I asked her if she wanted her diaper back and she said yes. Sure enough she peed (or wee’d) about 30 seconds later. Then last Friday she came up to mom and said “poo-poo”. Sue checked and said, “maybe you did, but maybe you didn’t”. Sure enough Emelia had indeed done the deed. So today we made a trip out to the store to pick up some new items.

First up with a BABYBJÖRN potty chair:

Second was the BABYBJÖRN Safe Step:

Sue and I really liked them and to be honest they are a nice, simple design that is well made. Their stuff is worth buying since it holds up so well. We were going to get pink ones since we are having two girls, but they were out so we picked up the only other color: white. They are sharp looking and Emelia was ecstatic in the store when we put them in the cart.

Now each time we make a run to the bathroom we make sure Emelia gets to join in. She gets to sit for a few minutes and practice using the potty. She even asks for some TP and does a good job cleaning up; however, she’s only had a couple of chances to try it out and no miracles have occurred. So, she doesn’t have anything to clean up. Lastly, she uses the “seat: to reach the sink to wash her hands. It’s still a bit of a reach, but she’s almost tall enough to do it right by herself.

Now I get to spend the rest of the night trying to figure out how this little 19 month old can get her parents to buy a potty for her and then actually want and try to use it.

Just don’t expect anything too quickly. Potty training is a process and it’s going to go at the pace and start at Emelia’s will. She’s likely to lose interest before starting serious potty training. This is a good step though.
