Dr. Seuss in Chinese

The latest addition to Emelia’s library: Dr. Seuss books translated into Chinese. Oddly enough we have at least half of the English versions (in various conditions e.g. missing pages, torn pages, etc.). These versions have both English and Chinese words, which is great. No more translating odd stories and names on the fly for Sue. Somebody did the hard part already. We got some other Chinese kids books too, but these ones really made the biggest impression on me.

that is way cool! i didn’t even know there were translations for half of the seuss-isms. wonder how accurate that is….

Most of the sounds and names are transcribed (I believe that is the correct term). Words other than names are translated. So, when Sue reads the story you can hear a lot of Chinese words then some transcribed names.
For example the name Icabod sounds like Ick-a-bwa-duh (my made up way of writing down the sounds). However, “One Fish, two fish” is translated into “一条鱼，两条鱼” (yi tiao yu, liang tiao yu).

I had a hard time reading and understanding Suess in English. Bet hearing it done in Chinese is pretty cool though.
