16 Months

After a year goes by the tendency to celebrate every month subsides. Emelia turned 16 months old today. I took some time to go through some old pictures and it seems like yesterday that she was born. It also seems like James was her age. Now, he’s 3 1/2 and Emelia is nearly 1 1/2. Time flies when you’re having fun.
I’m not sure if I mentioned it before, but at her last checkup (15 months) she was 25 pounds on the nose and 31 1/2 inches tall. Not bad for a girl. That keeps her in the 90th percentile for weight and 85th (or so) for height. I think she’s a bit above average for intelligence, but I’m biased. She just seems too smart for her age.
Lately Xuemei has begun speaking and repeating more. She’s able to say things like “socks”, “shoes”, “baby” and even “don’t want any”. Her ability to comprehend both English and Chinese is amazing. You can tell her “put that back where you found it” and she’ll do just that. No need to repeat yourself either. Tell her “put that in the trash can” and she’ll happily waddle to the kitchen to dispose of whatever it was that she had. This only touches the tip of the iceberg that are her capabilities.
Physically she’s getting better and better. She can nearly run around the house now. Climbing stairs is no longer a chore, but coming down with not being tall enough to get a good grip on the railing. Crawling onto the couch and crawling over the back of the couch are nothing to her.
She’s also becoming more and more independent. She wants to do things on her own, but sometimes she still likes help and/or the attention that you give her while doing something for her. Her high chair is seeing less and less of her since she likes to sit on the dining table chairs like a big girl. She also likes to feed herself, which sometimes is okay with us. Some foods are just best eaten with utensils and not hands.

Oh, she already talks back. “Can I have a kiss?” No! “Do you want to come to daddy?” No!

She comes from very smart parents so her intelligence is of no surprise. Just wait the best is yet to come,,,,, and come again.
Dad.
