Hammered

We got really hammered with the storms yesterday. I was at work when the first ones hit. The sky was black as night and it just came down like crazy. It hailed while I was at work for about 10 minutes straight; most of it pea sized hail. Sue got just rain at her job. Amy’s work place got hit just as bad as mine, although, their power went out twice.

When I got home I took a few minutes to assess the damage at the house. Our place suffered a bit. The garden took the biggest hit. All of our Chinese veggie and eggplant plants had shredded leaves. I hope they survive. The spinach is all but dead, but I’m not sure if it was the hail, rain or hot temperatures. I don’t expect to have enough for a mouthful. The front garden bed was hit badly too. The gutters need a cleaning since they drain too slowly. The water just overflowed the side and proceeded to rearrange all of the mulch. The water made big troughs and nearly washed away the bulbs! Everything else seemed to be in good order.

We watched the news last night only to learn that the hail was much worse in our town. It was coming down in nickel and golf ball size chunks! The lighting took its toll too. One house not far from us caught fire after being struck. Last night a couple more storms rumbled through, but didn’t come very close to us and were much weaker due to the very cool temperatures. We’re in store for more storms today.

On a side note it has been sweltering at my job for weeks now. Today isn’t bad, but it is 63 outside right now. Not exactly hot weather. Well, we received email yesterday stating that in order to reduce costs the building management is going to reduce the number of hours that the a/c and heat runs and increase the temperature 2 degrees. Seeing as it is about 80 degrees at my desk during the summer I will be suffering this year after this change. Idiots.

yeah, our spinach resembles dried herbs more than healthy greens right now. i’m not sure what the problem is though.

as for the heat @ work i wonder if anyone has done a cost benefit analysis to see if the productivity that they’ll lose by having overheated employees will outweigh the savings on electricity….

They should also factor in the amount of a/c that is lost due to people opening windows to let in a breeze. Out with the cool air and in with a warm breeze. Not to mention those folks like me have to run a fan to keep cool. It all adds up and I don’t think they look at all the details.
