Yearly Maintenance

Yesterday, we brought the little one in for some yearly maintenance. Poked, prodded, weighed and fluids taken. The results were an upset and screaming/crying, but altogether healthy baby. Her growth has slowed a little since her last visit. She’s dropped from the 95th percentile for weight down to 75th. Her height and head size percentiles remained the same at 75th and 50th respectively. She’s 23 pounds on the nose and 29.75 inches long.

She got her regular shots, which she’s learned to hate. When the nurse comes in she remembers that she gave her shots last visit (three months ago) and squirms and screams to get away. This time she got three shots: Two in one leg and one in the other. Shortly after that we had to bring her in to get blood drawn for a lead test. She really didn’t like that.

First the woman tried the right arm, but couldn’t raise a vein. She moved to the other arm and some how was able to find one there. For the life of me I didn’t see anything, but she seemed satisfied. One poke was all it took. Of course the entire time she is holding Emelia while trying to sooth her and I was doing my best to keep her little arm out and available for the woman to poke.

Thankfully, Emelia doesn’t hold any grudges against us. She was a happy little girl when I picked her up from daycare. The shots seemed to have no affect on her, not even a fever. Next checkup is in three months.
