A Nasty Evening

Last night turned out to be a pretty nasty evening. Just after I made the previous posting containing the video of the rain the power went out. It turned off and on repeatedly after 6:15 and then by 6:30 was off for good. I spent some time trying to figure out what to do while Sue and Emelia napped, and I was downstairs listening and watching the storm. So, I took some time and used my laptop to write a post about the three rain storms we had yesterday. Well, I never got a chance to publish it since the power did not come back on again. (I’ll publish that post some time later.)

The third storm seemed to be the worst. It went from about 6:00 or 6:15 until about 7:00. Nasty with lots of wind and lightning. Seeing as the a/c was on all day and we had water and gas we whipped up a dinner and decided to wait to see how long it would take to get power. Well, by 8:15pm we decided it was getting uncomfortably hot in the house and outside was no better. Little Emelia was in a very fussy mood. The heat and the lack of light seemed to be getting to her. I think she was also picking up some of our anxiety as well.

So, we called Amy to see if we could spend the night at her house. She said, “No problem” and we went off to pack her and Emelia’s stuff. With flashlight in hand I set to emptying the freezer and refrigerators into coolers to bring over Amy’s. She had power and I did not want to lose all the food.

All packed and ready to go Emelia became extremely fussy and was crying. Sue got her calmed down and I took her in my truck to Amy’s. Well, she didn’t stay calm for long. She screamed the entire way. It’s only about 15 minutes (with working traffic lights), but it seems like and hour when the baby is screaming and cannot be calmed.

We made it to Amy’s all in order and no worse for wear. Unloaded and tried to stuff the contents of two freezers into one already occupied freezer. Needless to say that it would be unsafe to try opening the thing right now. You’re likely to get hit with frozen meat and veggies.

After all that the night went pretty well. All three of us fit comfortably well onto the full size bed at Amy’s and the a/c was working well so nobody was hot. Emelia did well, although, she was hungry as a horse. She ended up eating more last night than normal.

Sue and Amy are going out this afternoon to buy decorations so I’ll be watching Emelia and James myself after work. I’m also picking them up so I’m driving Amy’s car. I got to drop off both James and Emelia today at daycare. It’s not too difficult, but I can see it being a pain to do in the rain/snow. At least we don’t have to worry about that until we have another kid. One is enough for now.

Tonight’s forecast is for more storms. I’m crossing my fingers that they blow right by without killing our power again.
