The newer ones are water lubricated (I think)and the motors have sealed bearings. If there is one, use any oil/grease cause you don't drink it. As for a genny a small one around 2 or 3 thousand watts should do you well. Should also run the heat in the winter if needed. Just my 2 cents. I had the same thought watching all that water come down, "At least I don't have to water the plants." That's a good thing seeing as the bearings on that damn pump are really going now. We had to stop using it just to keep the noise down. It is getting loud enough now to disrupt us while upstairs or outside. I will keep my eyes open for a small generator, but seeing as little as this happens I'm not ready for a big investment. A small one big enough to keep the fridge going and maybe a fan and light would be okay with me. Be thankful for small victories.
