Extreme Makeover, Revisited

Sue and I were talking and happened upon the subject of the Extreme Makeover project that took place not too far from our home. She immediately started to tell me some juicy gossip that she learned from her coworker. Apparently, her coworker and her husband are not big fans of the woman and are very well up to date on her “adventures” in life. The woman makes it into the news often and they clip the articles. Well, I can’t keep it to myself so here we are.

The first big detail is that she is trying to put her new house on the market. I don’t know why, but from my viewpoint it looks like she’s trying to cash in on the free house makeover. She tried to put the place on the market shortly after they finished. Well, somebody, I only wish I knew who, didn’t want it to go on the market and put a stop to it. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Extreme Makeover people put a stop to it. Either way it looks like her plan was to write a soppy story, get a new, free house and sell it for profit. Of course she could also be struggling to pay the taxes, but I think that unlikely.

Secondly two of the kids she is raising are not hers. Sounds nice to me. A woman takes in a couple of kids infected with HIV and raises them as her own. What wasn’t mentioned in the show (only in the paper) is that she gets a $40k check per year for each child. Not bad. $80k of money from the government. That’s more than enough to raise two kids. Of course this could just be hearsay, but I’m sure somebody knows whether or not the government helps support people in her situation.

Lastly she’s been in the paper for things other than her “charitable” ways. She apparently has a bit of a drug problem. The papers have mentioned her getting into trouble because of drugs. In her defense these could have been from far in the past, but I think that unlikely. Nobodies that get into drugs don’t make it into the paper. People that standout that get into drugs are publicized.

It really makes you wonder if the EM people really did any research on the woman before doing the show.

Yes, when you care for a ward of the state, or if you adopt them, you get a check from the government. Medical bills are cared for by public monies and checks are given to the caretaker for food, clothing, and a small amount for expenditures. One thing I will almost guarantee is that it’s not likely $40k per child. It can be enough so that the caretaker does not have to work if they have multiple children, but it’s not a lavish living.

I highly suspect that she is working a full time job. She was making enough to support a house and a houseful of kids on her own. She is getting money some where. It may not be very expensive to live in the area, but it certainly is not cheap. A house in her neighborhood goes for a fair amount of money.

My point is that she seems to be out only to make money. I’m sure you can come up with a reason for each thing I mentioned, but from the outside it still looks bad.

    I certainly agree.
