Akismet

If you are using WordPress and not Akismet you’re missing out on a very, very nice spam filtering tool. Until I started this blog I had no idea how prevalent blog comment and trackback spam was. Now, as I gain a few readers and links back to xiaoniu.org are found around the net my spam has gone up dramatically. Here steps in Akismet.

I started out only using the WordPress comment approval feature and found that spam had to be sifted through daily. That got old real fast. So, I broke down and setup Akismet and so far I have no complaints. I never found a comment marked as spam accidentally (that I know of) and only three comments have ever made it to the moderation queue mistakenly. After reviewing them I can see why they slipped through, but they are the exception.

BTW this site is by no means popular (Google pagerank of 3/10), but Akismet caught 610 pieces of blog spam in less than one week. Not bad. Less work for me.
