Something new at work

On Tuesday, January 2nd I officially move over to a new project at work. There is a very large project running until next year and I am one of the first two lucky people that get to work on it. It’s only a 6 week assignment. Our job is to learn the architecture of the new system and actually get a chance to write some of the code. The goal is knowledge transfer.

I think it is going to be very interesting working on this project. I am very eager to get back into coding. It’s been so long since I’ve done anything significant. I’ve been stuck attending meetings, shooting around emails, writing documentation and “managing” projects (to a small degree).

There may be a couple of sticking points though. First, the pace at which the other group is working is faster than what we’ve been doing up until now. The group has a strict schedule and meets daily to figure out if they are on or off target. This will take some getting used to.

Second, and the more important thing is that I’m supposed to give at least 80% of my time to this project for the next 6 weeks. Seeing as I’ve been heavily involved in two other assignments it will take some time to transfer that load off of my plate. Then again that may piss off a few people and things might again change. We’ll just have to see. I hope to give this project 80% of my attention one way or another.
