High Deryni – Katherine Kurtz

Compared to other books I’ve been reading recently I whipped right through “High Deryni“. I guess I had more spare time on my hands than I thought. Actually, I think the reason I made it through this one quickly is because I didn’t have my laptop with me for a couple weekends. Hence I had to find something else to keep me occupied.

This book focused primarily on an impending battle/war with a neighboring area (kingdom?). It was interesting to see how the story worked out, and I was definitely sure that the main characters would live seeing as there are other books about them, but there was major problem. Kurtz completely forgot about the bishops causing all the trouble. They were put into prison early on in the book and pretty much forgotten completely. I would have liked a little bit more closure on that one. The first two books were primarily about those bishops. You get to the end and then just ignore them. Odd.

I think I already mentioned that I wanted to finish up some other books I’m reading before I start another Kurtz novel. Well, things never go the way you think they will and I’m a creature of habit (like many of us). For some unknown reason I have a habit of always having a book handy. Not to mention spending my break at work surfing the net is likely to get me in trouble. They monitor our internet usage! Damn.

So, I read some magazines this week, but finished them quickly. The other books are too big to lug around. So, I brought in the first book of the next Kurtz trilogy, “The Bishop’s Heir“. I’m crossing my fingers and hoping that Kurtz gets better with age and experience writing stories. Don’t take my criticism as reason not to read her, just keep in mind that she is not the epic author I’ve come to expect.

I should also mention that Sarah was kind enough to loan “Crossroads of Twilight” and “Knife of Dreams” on audio CD to me. I ripped CoT and have already listened to a few chapters. It is very nice to listen to the story and hear the names of people and places pronounced as they were intended. The immediate downside of this is that unless you know the storyline well enough you might not realize which character the name matches up with. The pronunciation is that different for me.

I should also mention that I thought I hadn’t read KoD, but it seems I have. Weird. I totally forgot I read it. Oh well. I guess memory goes away as we age.
