Altamont Fair 2006

Last night we went to the Altamont Fair and had a pretty good time. For years we’ve been going to the Dutchess County Fair, but this year we felt the need for something different and something a bit closer to home. Amy and Mike have been to the Altamont Fair once before, but only for a short time. So, this trip was pretty new for all of us.

At first it was a little disappointing. There were only a handful of food vendors in sight and not much going on. We ate some of the expensive steak sandwiches, blooming onion, etc and made our way around the place. It’s pretty much two separate sections separated by a track and grand stand. By the time we made it to the other end we realized that the the fair was a good size. Not as big as Dutchess and definitely not as busy, but big enough to kill the evening.

Since we had James we spent plenty of time showing things to him and watching his reaction. He got to pet a milk cow and saw tons of animals. His favorite seems to have been the chickens and other poultry. They make lots of noise, there was lots of them in cages and they move more than the cows. He was squeaking when the roosters crowed. It was fun to watch.

Near the end we made our way through the rides looking for ones suitable for him to go one. There were only two that a toddler could go on: a train and the carousel. He went on the train once with Amy. Then he went on the carousel twice with dad and once with me. We got a few pics and even some video. He had a great time on both, even though he went on the carousel more than once.

Next year we might just have to make a trip to the New York State Fair. It’s supposed to be very big and well worth the trip. The downside is that it is a good 2 hours drive. We’d probably have to spend the night out there or spend a lot of time in the car. We shall see.

I’ve given that a though at the end of the summer for the past couple years. We usually end up going to one or two fairs and are all pooped out or unwilling to spend the money to go to another. Maybe next year we’ll go. Thanks for the invite though!
