The walls are coming down

Well, only one wall and it’s not much of a wall to start with. It’s actually just some peg board and panelling nailed to some 2×4s. It had to go though!! I’m still boggled as to its original purpose. It certainly didn’t keep things out. It created a fake hallway, for no reason. Without the panelling and pegboard we have another 4 feet or so of floor space. Not to mention there’s more light and ventilation. I can’t wait to finish this project.
The plan is to take all the crap out of the basement from the unifinished side. We want the space to be functional and as it is now it isn’t anything but a nuisance. Once we get everything out we’ll see to sealing the walls, cleaning and painting the floors as well as insulating where necessary. Make up and install some shelving. Maybe even create a nice small storage room for our stuff.
The finished side may get gutted too. There is a funky smell down there and for the life of me I can’t get rid of it. The dehumidifer helps tremendously, but I have a feeling that it is just embedded in the carpet, walls and ceiling tiles. I think it all has to go. The panelling on that side definitely has to be replaced. I’d prefer to have wall board for the walls. And decent lighting. I’ll be damned, but there are three lights with three different switches and the area doesn’t get properly lit. I wonder what they did in that room.
The main reason for starting this is that we need some decent storage space. I’m reluctant to put stuff down there unless we can do something with the smell. But we need to clear out the baby’s room. It’ll have a baby in it soon enough. Not to mention I got a lot of work done over last weekened. Both door openers are in and a number of small projects are complete. Yeah! Now for even more work, and as Sue likes to remind, more expenses. Whippee.

now i have an old john cougar melloncamp song stuck in my head, thanks. that sounds like quite the project, and i’m quite familiar with your outlook, who wants to put stuff that will be used in the future in a place where it will gather a nasty smell? might as well make it functional, pleasing to the eye and non-smelly.

I like my basement to be like my women: functional, pleasing to the eye and non-smelly.
You lost me on the JCM reference.
