Deryni Rising - Katherine Kurtz

For the first book in a sizable series “Deryni Rising” was okay. It was a very quick read and didn’t have too much detail. Some parts of the story are quite predictable. For one the story makes you feel like Kelson is going to die in his confrontation with Charissa, but seeing as he is the main character I didn’t believe that for a second.
There are plenty of references to Saint Camber and plenty of magic. The only thing that is difficult to understand is the distinct difference in the type of magic in this book as compared to the Legends trilogy. It isn’t the same and the magic seems much more involved in the Legends books. In “Deryni Rising” magic is accomplished by speaking a phrase. I’m curious to see how Kurtz bridges the gap between the techniques.
I’m on to the second book, “Deryni Checkmate“. It is just as short (300 pages). I hope the storyline is good enough to keep me interested.
