It feels like ages since I finished reading a book. No offense to “Camber the Heretic“, but it took me a long time to get through this one. It’s the longest book in the trilogy (not long compared to others I’ve read), but I’ve just been too busy to read much. Even at work I’ve kept busy with other things.
Well, I finished “Camber the Heretic” over the weekend. It was pretty good. The story gets kinda gruesome near the end, not that I mind (Terry Goodkind’s books are almost always graphic), but it is completely different than the rest of the book. It was a shame what happens to the Deryni people, but these books were designed to set the stage for the 300 years prior to the Chronicles series.
My overall feeling is that the series is worth reading, especially if you plan to read the rest of Kurtz’s Deryni books. They are well written and complete compared to the Chronicles series. I started on “Deryni Rising” over the weekend and you can get a feeling how the stories interconnect. There are references to Camber in Deryni Rising, but without reading the Legends series you won’t know much about him.
Just a quick note on Deryni Rising. It seems like a good story, but it’s way too short. Kurtz could have done a better job writing this one. The story is predictable and superficial. I’m used to the Goodkind and Jordan epics. This one just isn’t a novel. It’s more like a short story or a novela. It’s the start of the series and her other books are good so I’ll let this pass. I should be done with Deryni Rising in a day or two.
