Killing Time

When you stay home sick, unless you are sleeping, you might be stretched for things that you can do while bound to the bed or couch. I spent most of the morning sleeping, but there is a limit on how much sleeping that I can do. I found myself watching TV, reading and now that I have a laptop surfing the net.

Hu Jintao made a trip to the US and was on tv today talking with Bush. It was mostly boring talk about this and that, but nothing of substance. I did find one part of the interesting though. Once Hu Jintao started talking there was a Chinese woman screaming and yelling in the background. I was curious how long they would let it go on. After a minute the cameras were focused on her, but there were people trying to calm her down. I wonder what she had to say.

“My 5 year old weighs 212 pounds”. That is the title of the Montel Williams show that was on today. He’s always one to have shows that are designed to shock and amaze you. I watched a couple minutes of this, but ended up too disgusted to continue. All of the peopleon the show had kids (1-5 year olds) that are grossly obese. Genetics is one thing, but almost every one of them said that they feed their kids lots of food to make them that way. Whatever the kids want they get it. One woman fed her kid pork chops and steak. His bottle is filled with root beer. He was 3 years old and 57 pounds. WTF!?

Somehow I ended up on Sharkle.com. It’s a site similar to Youtube.com where people upload videos. I didn’t watch too many, but I did find a few I liked. I’ll have to make my way back there another time.

  • Boy selling beer on the street - This is a clip from the Man Show. It’s too bad the show didn’t last. It was pretty good.
  • Lazy Muncie - An interesting white-boy-rap about Muncie, Indiana. It’s long, but well done. I found out that this is actually a response to an SNL skit named Chronicles of Narnia, which is the “East Coast” version. The “West Coast” version is Lazy Monday
  • Microsoft iPod Parody - Somebody took the time to show how MS can screw things up. Clearly they are an fan of Apple. This movie is about how MS takes Apple’s simple packaging for the iPod and Microsoft-izes it.
  • Chinese Opera - Some short clips of tranditional, Chinese opera. There is even one of a 5 year old in a Chinese opera.

ChinesePod is an excellent Chinese language education site. I’ve been to the site a few times before, but ended up there again today. There are many free podcasts ranging from beginner to advanced for people learning Chinese. I’m not sure I’m yet up to even the beginner level, but I see the potential of the site’s content. What brought me there was a video podcast on Youtube.com:

Something I found the other day that was both interesting and disturbing is Wikitruth.info. It is a site dedicated to righting the wrongs of Wikipedia. Apprently the people that run Wikipedia feel the need to remove information from the site that isn’t desirable to all visitors. That doesn’t really fit my definition of a community created and maintained pot of knowledge. If it is real and known it should be okay to write about. The following articles were removed from Wikipedia, and can now be fount on Wikitruth: Brian Peppers, Justin Berry, and Paul Barresi.

[...] I believe I mentioned on a number of occasions (1, 2, 3, 4) that I’ve been trying out Chinesepod. Well, seeing as I have plentiful time on my hands at the moment (between diapers and feedings) I decided to sign up for the free 7 day trial. [...]
