Umm Umm Ummmm

Feifei is turning into quite the character. Sometimes he just wants to play by himself, but sometimes he pays very close to attention to those around him. Last night he was paying especially close attention to me.
Let me set the scene. Amy is in the other room talking on the phone. Sue and James are on the couch and she is trying to feed him. I’m on the love seat eating my food. He is being a handful and just wants to play. He’s in constant motion.
I told him to sit and eat dinner, and plopped him down next to Sue. She continued to feed him, all the while he was watching me like a hawk. I started to make yummy sounds and then, funny enough, he mimicked me. I made the sound “Umm Umm Ummmm”. Then he took a big bite and did the same. We kept doing this for a while. Any variation of “Umm” and he repeated it.
Then I decided to take it to another level. After eating a bite of food I did the move where you kiss your fingers and raise your hand claiming how good it tastes. Right after I did it, he takes a bite, puts his hand near his mouth and raises it out making a sound. I was shocked that he did so well imitating me. We spent the rest of the meal making yummy sounds to eat other. He also stayed put and ate all of his food.
I should have realized early that he was in tune with me last night. Before we ate we went to Home Depot to buy a ceiling fan. I pushed him around in the cart and spent time talking to him. When we were in the light department he kept saying “ba”. I said, “light”. Back and forth a while and then he starts to mimick me. I said, “light” and he says, “ligh”. He doesn’t have the “T” sound down yet. We spent quite a bit of time saying “light” to each other.
He’s really starting to mimick speech and actions. He also knows very well what “no” means, but he doesn’t always obey. It really depends on who is saying it. Usually, when I say it he listens. On occassion it takes a couple of attempts and “no”s before he stops, but eventually he does. With others his ears are closed. He doesn’t listen to everybody.

Sounds very very familiar
. The little ones are smarter than one would think, not to mention funny as hell.

This is also the time Amy really needs to watch what she says around him. He’s turning into a parrot and is likely to repeat something you don’t want him to say like, “I’m freezing my ass off up here.”
