Zillow.com

If you have’t heard of it before you should check out Zillow.com. I initially went to that site because they were using Ajax pretty heavily and I wanted to see what they did. Come to find out it is a pretty interesting site. They have an interface much like Google Maps, but instead of showing stores and providing driving directions they show you the value of houses for each house in a neighborhood.

I suspect they pull their information from public records like USPDR. This can be out of date and only shows the appraised value of the house the last time it was appraised for tax purposes. This is generally a few or many years out of date. If you click on a house value you can see the details for the house. Number of bedrooms, square footage, etc.

I think the interesting part is how easy this site makes it for anybody to see the value and details of a house. The information is out there, but it takes some effort to collect. Zillow is doing for house values, what Google is doing for everything else. I wonder of Google will consume Zillow some day.
