House Inspection

I took off part of Friday to get the house inspected. It was very cold, but we spent plenty of time checking out the exterious of the house the property and then checked out the interior. The guy that did the inspection ended up being the same guy that did Mike and Amy’s house when they bought a couple years ago, although, we didn’t plan it that way.
The guy said that the house was well maintained. Some things are aging that will have to be replaced in a few years and there are some things that will need more immediate attention. Most things you find in an old house are already updated, like windows. We’ll probably have gutters installed pretty soon after moving in. I’m not sure why the original owners never had them installed, but they’ll help keep the basement dry in heavy rains. It isn’t wet now, I just like to prevent problems before they occur. Even the inspector suggested putting in gutters.
We decided that we are going to keep the hardwood floors and not install carpets, at least for the time being. We are going to get some area rugs though. One or two for the living room, one for the dining room and maybe another for the bedroom. It’s fun shopping for them. We found one at Tuesday Morning that we liked, but it was damaged. BJ’s sells some decent wool rugs, but the selection is very limited. Boscov sells a few. The best selection of rugs has to be at Macy’s.
They practically have a full area rug store right in the Macy’s. We spent some time last night checking them out. There are almost too many to choose from. We found one style and color that we both like the for the living room. Just need to find a style we like for the dining room. And we should get more accurate measurements of the rooms. We have a pretty good idea of what sizes we’ll need, but it’s best to be sure.
We are not sure what we are going to do with the capet that goes up the stairs and into the hallways upstairs. I believe when the owner refinished the floors that they didn’t do that part and just put carpet over it. It’s quite an ugly carpet and should be replaced or removed. It’d be really nice to have that floor looking the same as the rooms up stairs and put a runner up the stairs. I guess we’ll just have to see what we have to work with when we get in.
I guess the next step in the process of buying the house is waiting for the appraisal to be completed. That’s the last thing that needs to be done before we can close on the house. We are scheduled to close March 10th, but we have the option of moving up the date. That would be nice. Gives us more time to get things ready for moving and actually doing the move. Gotta fix a few small things and install new locks too.
