Media Play

We found out this past Saturday that Media Play is closing the store in the South Hills Mall. Actually, to be more clear, all Media Play stores are closing. They company is losing too much money and decided to call it quits. It is a shame. You can see they were trying to survive as more of a niche store. They always had a huge magna and anime sections. They were also the place for people to shop that couldnt’ stand the loud, showy atmosphere of Best Buy.

I’m surprised that the company did some a poor job of informing their workers. We were talking to one of the full timers from the store and she said that the manager informed the employees about the closure less than 24 hours before the store was to start closing. On Sunday, the day after, the entire store is covered in liquidation signs. “20-40% off everything” and “Store closing forever”. I went to get a book and had to fight them to get the “20% off the lowest ticketed price” they were advertising in the book section. They were going to give me 20% on the original price instead of the actual price.

This doesn’t really help the mall any bit. That end of the mall has a furniture store and it is closing today (forever). Now, Media Play is closing. The only anchors they have left are Burlington Coat Factory and Kmart. It’s a shame, but the mall doesn’t seem to be doing anything to help boost business.

There are plenty of rumors saying that people are not able to renew their leases. Others want to open new stores, but the management office isn’t responding. It gives you the feeling they want the mall to die out. They are only hurting themselves though. I don’t think they’ll be able to get rid of Price Chopper, Kmart and Burlington unless they break the lease and pay out a lot of money first.
