I finished reading “Wizard’s First Rule” by Terry Goodkind last night. I had 100 pages to go and if you have read the book you know that means you have to finish the rest of the story before getting to sleep. This is the first Goodkind book that I have ever read and it was great! I’m hooked! I’ve heard varying opinions from other people that have read his books, but I heard that about Robert Jordan books, which I enjoyed as well. This book dives right into a new world, albeit smaller than expected, that contains new creatures and races of people as well as some that you would find from other authors. You are not overloaded with information about the world, but you are not left wanting to know more for long. After you read the book you’ll see that Goodkind has yet to scratch the surface of what exists in the world he created. It would be nice to see if he expands the view of the world.
The story was well written and has plenty of action. It has some of the same elements you’ll find in other epic style fantasy novels. Good versus evil, dragons, love story, etc. If you read the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan maybe you’ll make the same parallels as I did. This book has very similar aspects.
- The story starts out where an unsuspecting young man is thrust into a different life where he must save the world: Rand / Richard.
- The hero of the story constantly discovers new powers and abilities: Rand / Richard.
- Select women can control a magical power that men are not allowed to have: Aes Sedai / Confessors
The similaries between the story lines should by no means prevent you from reading either Goodkind or Jordan. There are definite differences between the authors’ style and story lines that make it worth reading both. Goodkind is near the top of my list of favorites. Sue finally finished “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” last night so I can get back to reading it myself.
